Demography is the systematic study of human populations — their size, composition, distribution and change over time. Population studies is the wider social-scientific enterprise built around it, asking not merely how many people there are but why populations behave as they do and what follows socially from how they behave. Formal demography is close to accountancy: it counts births, deaths and moves, and derives rates from them. Social demography is sociological: it asks why a woman in one district bears twice as many children as a woman in another, why infants die at different rates in the same city, and how caste, kinship, schooling, land and religion enter into decisions that look intensely private.
The field's organising insight is that populations change through only three mechanisms. Everything else — policy, culture, economy — works by altering one of them. The balancing equation states it plainly: a population at a later date equals the earlier population plus births, minus deaths, plus in-migration, minus out-migration. For a closed population, or for the world as a whole, migration drops out and change reduces to natural increase. This tautology is the discipline's backbone, because it forces every explanation to specify which component it acts upon.
Measures and composition
Demography's authority rests on comparable measures. The crude birth and death rates — events per thousand of the total population — are easy to compute but sensitive to age structure, so a young population can appear healthier than it is. Refined measures correct for this: age-specific fertility rates, the total fertility rate (the number of children a woman would bear if she lived through her childbearing years at current age-specific rates), the gross and net reproduction rates, and the age-standardised death rate. Mortality is captured by the infant mortality rate, the under-five and maternal mortality ratios, and by expectation of life at birth derived from the life table — the single most eloquent summary of a population's condition.
Composition matters as much as size. The sex ratio, which India expresses as females per thousand males, and the sex ratio at birth, are read as indices of survival advantage and of discrimination. The age pyramid yields the young, old and total dependency ratios, and the median age. Distribution adds density, urbanisation and the direction of migration streams. Replacement-level fertility — roughly two surviving children per woman, adjusted for mortality — is the threshold around which most contemporary debate turns, though population momentum means a population with a young age structure continues to grow for decades after reaching it.
Malthus, Marx and the transition
Thomas Malthus argued that population tends to increase geometrically while subsistence increases arithmetically, so that numbers are checked either by positive checks — famine, disease, war — or by preventive checks, above all delayed marriage and moral restraint. His pessimism has been repeatedly falsified by agricultural productivity, yet neo-Malthusian anxiety returns whenever resources, climate or food security are in question. Marx and Engels rejected the whole frame: there is no eternal law of population, only laws specific to modes of production. Capitalism generates a relative surplus population, an industrial reserve army functional to the depression of wages; poverty therefore reflects distribution and property, not numbers. Modern demography largely accepts the Marxian point that population problems are institutionally produced while retaining Malthus's attention to the arithmetic of growth.
Demographic transition theory, sketched by Warren Thompson and formalised by Frank Notestein, describes a movement from high and fluctuating birth and death rates, through a phase in which mortality falls first and fertility lags — producing rapid growth — to a regime of low rates and near-stationary population. Its descriptive power is real; its explanatory claims are contested. Critics note that it generalises a western European experience, that the Princeton European Fertility Project found fertility declines beginning at widely differing levels of income and urbanisation, that mortality in the global South fell through imported medicine rather than industrialisation, and that the theory names no mechanism connecting modernisation to smaller families. Caldwell's wealth-flows theory supplied one candidate: fertility falls when the net flow of resources between generations reverses, so that children cost more than they contribute.
The sociological bridge
The most important sociological move in the field was made by Kingsley Davis and Judith Blake, who asked how social structure could possibly affect fertility. Their answer was that it must act through a limited set of intermediate variables — factors governing exposure to intercourse, exposure to conception and the completion of gestation. Age at marriage, the proportion never married, remarriage of widows, abstinence and separation, contraception, sterilisation, lactational infecundity and abortion exhaust the channels. Any custom, doctrine or policy that alters fertility does so through one of them. Later work by John Bongaarts distilled these into a small set of proximate determinants that account for most variation between populations. The framework rescued demography from a sterile choice between economic and cultural explanation by giving both a specified route to the outcome.
Counting India
India possesses one of the older population-data systems in the world. The decennial Census of India, conducted since the 1870s and after independence by the Registrar General, remains the only complete enumeration and the basis for delimitation, reservation and devolution. The Sample Registration System was built precisely because civil registration of births and deaths was incomplete; it uses dual recording — a resident enumerator and an independent half-yearly survey — to estimate vital rates for states and larger districts. The National Family Health Survey adds what administrative data cannot capture: contraceptive use, unmet need, anthropometry, anaemia, immunisation, domestic violence and women's decision-making. Each has limits — the census undercounts circular and seasonal migrants and defines migration by place of last residence, the SRS is thin below the state level, and NFHS estimates carry sampling error at district scale. Serious demography reads them together rather than trusting one.
Indian debates
Four arguments dominate. The first concerns the demographic dividend — the transitional window in which the working-age share is unusually large. Whether it yields growth depends on schooling, health and employment; without them a bulge of young workers becomes a liability rather than an asset, and the window closes state by state on very different timetables. The second is regional divergence: Kerala and Tamil Nadu completed their fertility transitions decades before parts of the Hindi-speaking north, and Dyson and Moore traced this to kinship structure and female autonomy rather than income alone — exogamous, distance-marrying north Indian kinship weakening women's position relative to the south. The third is the long quarrel between coercive and rights-based family planning: the sterilisation excesses of the Emergency, the abandonment of method-specific targets in the mid-1990s, and the reproductive-rights framework consolidated after the Cairo conference. The fourth is what follows the transition — population ageing, old-age support in the absence of universal pensions, and adverse sex ratios at birth produced by son preference and sex-selective abortion, the phenomenon Amartya Sen named the missing women.
For the UPSC answer
Anchor the answer in the three components and the balancing equation, then show that each is socially determined — this converts a statistics question into a sociology one. Use demographic transition theory as the organising narrative but always attach its critique, and deploy Davis and Blake's intermediate variables to explain how caste, kinship or education actually reach fertility. For India, insist on regional divergence over national averages, cite the Dyson and Moore argument about kinship and female autonomy against a purely economic reading, and close with the dividend, ageing and sex ratio as the three issues on which population policy now turns.
