Environmental sociology studies the relationship between social organisation and the biophysical world — how societies extract, transform and dispose of matter and energy, how the resulting damage is distributed, how environmental problems become recognised as problems, and how societies respond through movements, markets, science and law. It treats the environment neither as inert scenery nor as a determinant of social life, but as something continuously produced and contested by social arrangements.
Its questions are distributive as much as ecological. Who uses nature and who bears the cost of that use? Why does damage accumulate even where knowledge of it is abundant? Is environmental degradation a fault of technology, of population, of capitalism, or of the very idea of development? And why do the poor, who consume least, live nearest to the harm?
From human exemptionalism to a new paradigm
Sociology was founded on the rule that social facts are explained by social facts. That discipline-defining move, useful against biological and racial explanation, hardened into what William Catton and Riley Dunlap called the human exemptionalist paradigm — the assumption that a species with culture and technology is exempt from ecological constraint, so that soil, water, energy and climate are simply not sociological variables. Their proposal of a new ecological paradigm insisted that human societies are one species among many in a finite biosphere, that social action has physical consequences which return as social causes, and that this feedback belongs inside sociological explanation. The field that grew from this claim had to reckon with the counter-charge of environmental determinism, and much of its early theoretical work was spent showing that taking nature seriously does not mean surrendering the social.
Explaining environmental harm
Three accounts dominate. Allan Schnaiberg's treadmill of production locates the cause in the structure of capitalist growth: enterprises must expand to survive, expansion means drawing more from ecosystems and returning more waste, and labour and the state are bound into the arrangement because jobs and revenue depend on it — so growth continues even when its ecological costs are recognised. The treadmill implies that environmental reform which does not touch the growth imperative will be absorbed.
Ecological modernisation theory, developed in the Netherlands and Germany, argues the opposite: advanced industrial societies can decouple growth from damage through cleaner technology, regulation, efficiency and the redesign of production, so that environmental care becomes an economic asset rather than a brake. Critics reply that decoupling is often only apparent, achieved by exporting dirty production to poorer countries.
Ulrich Beck's risk society shifts the ground again. In late modernity the central political conflict is no longer over the distribution of goods but over the distribution of hazards produced by industrial decision-making — radiation, chemicals, engineered organisms, climate change. These risks are frequently invisible to the senses, knowable only through contested expertise, indifferent to national borders and, in principle, capable of reaching their producers. Modernity thus becomes reflexive, occupied with the consequences of its own success.
To these must be added the environmental justice literature, which began with documentation in the United States that hazardous facilities cluster in poor and minority neighbourhoods, and generalised into the claim that environmental burden follows the lines of existing inequality — an insight that travels well to caste, tribe and class in India.
The Indian field
Indian environmental sociology developed less from pollution science than from conflict over natural resources, and this gave it a distinctive shape. Madhav Gadgil and Ramachandra Guha argued in Ecology and Equity that Indian society can be read as divided among omnivores — urban and industrial classes and large farmers able to draw resources from across the country — ecosystem people, who depend directly on the forests, pastures, rivers and soils of their own locality, and ecological refugees, those displaced from that base into urban slums. Environmental conflict is then the struggle between omnivores and ecosystem people over resources the state has largely allocated to the former, beginning with colonial forest law that converted commons into state property and criminalised customary use.
From this came the argument, made by Guha and given comparative form by Joan Martinez-Alier, that Indian environmentalism is an environmentalism of the poor: not a post-materialist concern for wilderness and scenery arising after prosperity, but a livelihood struggle by people whose subsistence is the thing at stake. Guha's The Unquiet Woods read Chipko in the Himalaya as peasant resistance with a long lineage rather than a novel green movement. Amita Baviskar's study of the Narmada valley showed the complexity beneath such readings, describing adivasi communities whose relationship with the land and with the movement's leadership did not fit any simple picture of ecological harmony.
Two further concerns are central. The commons — village forests, grazing land, tanks and fisheries — became a research field after Elinor Ostrom's work on self-governing resource institutions, and joint forest management and community conservation were assessed against it. And development-induced displacement made dams, mines, power plants and industrial corridors a sociological subject: who is counted as a project-affected person, how compensation ignores common property and non-title holders, and why the displaced are so heavily adivasi and Dalit. The movement record runs from Chipko and Appiko to Silent Valley, the Narmada Bachao Andolan, anti-mining struggles in Odisha and Jharkhand, and fisher and farmer resistance to coastal and land acquisition.
Current directions
The field's centre has moved towards climate change — the sociology of vulnerability and adaptation, of climate justice between and within countries, of denial and of the emotional and political management of knowledge about the future. Alongside it sit urban environmental sociology, with its air quality, waste and water conflicts and the eviction of the poor in the name of the green city; political ecology's attention to the power embedded in conservation and in scientific expertise; the study of the Anthropocene as a category for social theory; and debate over degrowth against sustainable development.
For the UPSC answer
Open by naming the exemptionalist blind spot and Catton and Dunlap's correction, which shows why environmental sociology needed founding at all. Set the treadmill of production against ecological modernisation, and use Beck when the question mentions risk, technology or uncertainty. On India, make Gadgil and Guha's three-way division the analytical spine, distinguish the environmentalism of the poor from Western post-material environmentalism, and illustrate with Chipko and Narmada. Close on displacement and climate justice to link environment to development and inequality rather than treating it as a separate subject.
