Vandana Shiva is the most widely read and most fiercely contested Indian voice on environment, gender and agriculture. Her central proposition is that the subordination of women and the exploitation of nature are not separate injustices but expressions of a single logic — the logic of a reductionist science and a capitalist development model that recognise as valuable only what can be measured, owned and sold. From this follows her account of maldevelopment: a process that generates commodities while destroying the subsistence systems on which the poor, and especially poor women, actually live.
Her work is best read as theory in the service of a movement. She writes as an activist, and her categories — the feminine principle, monocultures of the mind, biopiracy, seed sovereignty — were forged in campaigns against commercial forestry, hybrid seed, intellectual property in living organisms and the World Trade Organization's agricultural regime. That is simultaneously the source of her influence and the origin of the criticisms she attracts.
Life and intellectual formation
Born in Dehradun in 1952 to a forest conservator and a farmer, Shiva trained as a physicist and took a doctorate in the philosophy of science at the University of Western Ontario, working on foundational questions in quantum theory. The move from physics to ecology came through the Chipko agitation in the Garhwal Himalaya, in which she participated and which she later described as her real education: village women defending forests they depended on against contractors armed with the authority of scientific forestry.
In the early 1980s she founded a research foundation in Dehradun devoted to science, technology and natural resource policy, and in 1991 established Navdanya, a network for the conservation of native seed and the promotion of organic farming. She was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1993. Her subsequent career has combined seed-saving work in India with prominence in the global movement against corporate agriculture.
Ecofeminism and the feminine principle
Staying Alive (1988) is her foundational statement. Development, she argues, was never gender-neutral: by enclosing forests, commons and water, it destroyed precisely those resources that women managed and depended upon, while the productivity it created was recorded in male hands and in market prices. Women's work in gathering fuel and fodder, maintaining seed, tending livestock and cultivating for household consumption is invisible in national accounts, so its destruction registers as growth.
Behind this lies a philosophical claim. Shiva contrasts the Western scientific revolution's construction of nature as inert matter to be mastered with an Indian cosmological understanding of nature as Prakriti, an active, creative and feminine principle in which human life participates. Colonialism and development carried the first and suppressed the second. The recovery of the feminine principle is therefore not a claim about women's biology, on her account, but about an epistemology and a mode of production oriented to sustenance rather than accumulation. With the German sociologist Maria Mies, in Ecofeminism (1993), she extended this into a general critique of what the two authors call the subsistence perspective's displacement by capitalist patriarchy.
The critique of the green revolution
The Violence of the Green Revolution (1991) is her most sociologically detailed book. Taking Punjab as its case, it argues that high-yielding varieties were not a neutral technical improvement but a package — dwarf hybrids, chemical fertiliser, pesticide, assured irrigation, credit — that reorganised agriculture around purchased inputs. The consequences she traces are ecological and social at once: falling water tables and waterlogging, soil nutrient depletion, pest resistance requiring escalating chemical use, the disappearance of indigenous varieties and of pulses and millets from the cropping pattern, and the displacement of mixed farming by wheat and rice monoculture.
Socially, she argues, the package favoured those who could finance it, deepening differentiation between large and small cultivators, increasing indebtedness, and substituting machinery and herbicide for the labour of the poor and of women. The book's most contentious step is its final one: it reads the political violence in Punjab in the 1980s as, in part, a consequence of this agrarian transformation — of the frustrated expectations, ecological exhaustion and social dislocation it produced.
Monocultures of the mind, biopiracy and seed
Monocultures of the Mind (1993) generalises the agricultural argument into an epistemological one. Just as commercial forestry replaces diverse forest with uniform plantation, so a dominant scientific and bureaucratic knowledge system displaces the plural local knowledges of cultivators, healers and forest dwellers — first declaring them primitive, then rendering them extinct. Monoculture in the field and monoculture in the mind are the same operation.
Biopiracy (1997) applies this to intellectual property. Under the TRIPS regime, she argues, corporations patent plants, genes and derived compounds long known and used in the South, converting a common inheritance into private property and requiring farmers to pay for what they had freely reproduced. She was directly involved in legal challenges to patents on neem and to a claim over basmati rice, and campaigned against terminator technology and seed legislation restricting exchange of farm-saved seed. Against this she counterposes seed sovereignty — the right of farmers to save, exchange and breed their own seed — and, in her later work, Earth Democracy, a normative programme grounding rights in ecological interdependence rather than in property.
Place in Indian sociology and criticisms
Shiva's influence in Indian sociology runs through the study of environmental and women's movements and through debates on development, but her theoretical position has been vigorously contested — most importantly by the economist Bina Agarwal, whose 1992 essay proposed feminist environmentalism as an alternative. Agarwal's objections are the standard ones. First, essentialism: Shiva's account risks treating women as naturally closer to nature, when the connection is better explained by the gender division of labour, which assigns women responsibility for fuel, water and fodder and thus exposes them to degradation. Second, homogenisation: there is no single category of Indian women, and class, caste and region divide them; a landowning woman and a landless Dalit woman do not share an environmental interest. Third, historical simplification: attributing degradation almost entirely to colonialism and Western science understates pre-colonial inequality, caste-based exclusion from resources and indigenous patriarchy.
Further criticisms follow. Scholars argue that she romanticises subsistence, treating as harmony a condition also characterised by drudgery, seasonal hunger and patriarchal control, and that opposing modern agriculture wholesale ignores the food output that averted famine in a country that had been importing grain. Agricultural economists have disputed her empirical claims about genetically modified cotton and farmer suicides, and about yields under organic systems; critical journalistic profiles have pressed the same point. Her causal linking of the green revolution to Punjab militancy is widely regarded as underdetermined. Philosophers of science have objected that her critique of reductionism slides into a romantic anti-science that can be appropriated by cultural nationalism.
Legacy
Her defenders reply that the criticisms understate what she got right and early: the ecological unsustainability of input-intensive monoculture, the invisibility of women's subsistence labour in development accounting, the injustice of patenting knowledge held in common, and the political importance of seed. Groundwater depletion in Punjab and Haryana, the crop-diversification debate, farmer indebtedness, and the treatment of traditional knowledge in intellectual property law have all moved in the direction of her concerns. She remains the figure through whom ecofeminism entered Indian public argument.

Shiva is the name to reach for on ecofeminism, and the essential move is to state her thesis precisely — that the domination of nature and of women share a single logic, so ecological and gender questions cannot be separated — before turning to Bina Agarwal's feminist environmentalism as the critical counterweight. That pairing, the essentialism charge answered by the gender division of labour, is worth marks in almost any environment-and-gender question. On the green revolution, use her for the ecological and distributive costs while conceding the output gains, which shows balance. Cite biopiracy, monocultures of the mind and seed sovereignty when the question concerns globalisation, traditional knowledge or intellectual property. Contrast her with Ramachandra Guha, who reads Chipko as a peasant livelihood movement rather than an ecofeminist one, to display command of the debate rather than of a single position.
