A Starter Reading Spine

This course has given you the map of sociology — the concepts, the debates, the whole territory. This appendix is for the moment you want to leave the map and walk the land: to read the actual sociologists, in their own words, rather than summaries of them. It is a reading spine — a small, ordered sequence of books that, read in order, will take you from the first spark to genuine depth without drowning you.

The principle behind the order matters as much as the list. Read for love first, vocabulary second, primary sources third, and depth last. Most people who try to teach themselves sociology fail because they start with a dense theorist or a dry textbook, get discouraged, and quit. The spine below is engineered against that: it begins with two short, thrilling books whose only job is to make you want more, locks in the vocabulary once you are hooked, and only then sends you to the demanding primary sources — by which point you have the appetite and the scaffolding to actually enjoy them.

The reading spine, in order:

Mills, The Sociological Imagination — catch the spark. Short, electric, and the source of the idea this whole course is built on (Part 1). Read this first; it tells you what sociology is for and why it matters, and it is written to inspire, not to grind.
Berger, Invitation to Sociology — fall in love. The warmest, most delightful invitation into the discipline ever written — witty, humane, and full of the "aha" of seeing the social world for the first time. This is the book that makes people become sociologists.
A free introductory text (e.g. OpenStax Introduction to Sociology, freely available) — lock in the vocabulary. Once the two books above have hooked you, spend time with a systematic intro text to fix the core concepts and terms in place. Boring on its own; perfect once you already care.
One primary source per founder — Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Du Bois — meet the giants in their own words. Now you are ready for the founders (Part 4). Read one accessible work by each: a selection of Marx (the Manifesto and early writings on alienation), Durkheim (Suicide or The Elementary Forms), Weber (The Protestant Ethic), and Du Bois (The Souls of Black Folk). Read them for the concepts, not to grade the predictions (13.2.1).
For India — Srinivas, Social Change in Modern India, and Ambedkar, Annihilation of Caste — the tradition Part 6 restores. Two essential works: Srinivas for the sociology of caste and village India from within, Ambedkar for the most searching moral and social critique of caste ever written.
For the global turn — Said, Orientalism, and Connell, Southern Theory — decolonise the map. Said on how the West produced "the East" as an object of knowledge and power; Connell on building a sociology that takes the Global South seriously as a source of theory, not just data (Part 6).
Then choose one subfield you love and read three books deep — go from broad to deep. Having walked the spine, pick the corner that most grips you — crime, inequality, religion, the digital, whatever — and read three serious books in it, back to back. Depth in one area teaches you more about how sociology works than breadth ever can.

Two cautions about reading the real thing.

First, read primary sources for their concepts, not their conclusions. The founders were often wrong about specifics and predictions (13.2.1 on reading a theorist); their enduring gift is the lens, not the verdict. Do not be put off by a dated example or a failed prophecy — harvest the tool and move on.

Second, do not skip steps 1 and 2. The temptation, especially for the ambitious, is to jump straight to Marx or Foucault to prove seriousness. Resist it. The spark and the love come first for a reason: they supply the motivation that carries you through the hard reading later. A person who reads Mills and Berger first, and Marx fourth, will understand Marx better and enjoy him more than the person who started with Capital and gave up on page forty.
