Topic 13.2 taught you to judge others' sociology. This topic turns to building your own — the assembly of a personal toolkit of theories and methods, and the judgement to use it. And it begins with the single most important principle of doing sociology well, one that beginners almost always get backwards: the question comes first, and everything else — which theory, which method — is chosen to fit it.
Beginners get this backwards because they fall in love with a tool — a favourite theory (Marxism, symbolic interactionism, whatever first thrilled them) or a favourite method (statistics, or ethnography) — and then go looking for questions their beloved tool can answer, or worse, force every question through it. The master does the opposite: they start with the question , and then ask coldly, what theory would illuminate this, and what method could actually answer it? — reaching for whatever fits, even a tool they dislike. This inversion sounds simple and is profoundly hard, because it requires holding your favourite tools loosely and letting the problem, not your preference, dictate the approach. Learning it is the difference between someone who has a theory and someone who can do sociology.
The person with only a hammer.
There is an old saying: "If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." It names one of the deepest traps in all of thinking, and it has a proper name — the law of the instrument . When you have mastered one tool, you begin, without noticing, to see every problem as the kind of problem that tool solves — because that is the problem you know how to solve.
Watch it happen in sociology. The committed Marxist sees every social phenomenon as fundamentally about class and capital — religion, family, art, crime, all read as expressions of economic relations. The dedicated interactionist sees everything as face-to-face meaning-making, even large structures. The quantitative specialist reaches for a survey and a regression whatever the question; the ethnographer reaches for immersion and fieldwork whatever the question. Each is brilliant with their hammer — and each turns every problem into the kind of nail their hammer drives, missing everything their tool cannot grip.
The trap is seductive precisely because the hammer is genuinely good. Class analysis really does illuminate an enormous amount; so does interactionism; so do statistics and ethnography. The problem is not that the tool is bad but that no tool fits every question , and the person who has only one will, with total sincerity and real skill, misread every question that their tool does not suit — while feeling more confident, not less, because their single lens makes everything look explicable in its terms. The mark of a master is not having the best hammer. It is having many tools and the judgement to pick the one the problem actually needs — which sometimes means setting down the tool you love and picking up one you find less congenial, because this question calls for it.
The correct order of operations in sociology — and the one almost everyone reverses — is this:
First, get clear on the question. What, precisely, do you want to know? Not a topic ("I'm interested in crime") but a question ("Why did the crime rate fall in these cities but not those?" or "How do former prisoners experience re-entry?" or "Does this programme reduce reoffending?"). The precise question determines everything that follows — and a vague topic determines nothing, which is why work that starts from a topic rather than a question so often flails.
Then choose the theory to fit the question. Ask: what theoretical lens would best illuminate this? A question about how meaning is negotiated in interaction calls for interactionism; a question about how a structure reproduces inequality calls for a structural lens; a question about power and knowledge calls for a Foucauldian one. The theory is chosen because it fits the question , not because it is your favourite.
Then choose the method to fit the question. Ask: what method could actually answer this? — the crucial word being could (13.2.1 on method-claim fit). A question about how many and how patterned calls for quantitative methods (survey, statistics); a question about how experienced and what it means calls for qualitative methods (interviews, ethnography); a question about what changed over time calls for historical or longitudinal methods; a question about cause calls for a design that can actually support causal inference.
The question is the boss. Theory and method are its servants, selected for their fit, and swapped out the moment a different question needs a different fit. Reverse this — pick the tool first and bend the question to it — and you will do confident, skilled, systematically distorted work.
Going deeper: theory–method fit, and why mismatches ruin studies
The pairing of theory and method is not arbitrary; certain questions, theories, and methods fit each other, and mismatches produce work that cannot deliver what it promises. Seeing the fit is a core craft skill.
Different questions live at different levels and need matched tools.
Questions of pattern and prevalence — how much, how many, how distributed, what predicts what across a population? — need quantitative methods (surveys, administrative data, statistics) that can measure and generalise. Trying to answer "how patterned is X across society?" with a handful of deep interviews cannot work — the method cannot reach the scale the question asks about.
Questions of meaning and experience — how do people understand this, what is it like, how is meaning made? — need qualitative methods (in-depth interviews, ethnography, observation) that can get inside experience. Trying to answer "what does unemployment mean to those living it?" with a regression cannot work — the method strips out the meaning the question is about.
Questions of cause — does X actually produce Y? — need designs built for causal inference (experiments where possible, or careful quasi-experimental and longitudinal designs with attention to confounding, Part 7). A simple correlation cannot answer a causal question, however much data it has.
Questions of change and origin — how did this come to be, how has it transformed? — need historical and comparative methods that can trace processes over time.
And theory must match too: a question framed in interactionist terms (meaning, self, interaction) answered with a purely structural method will miss its own point; a structural question answered with pure micro-observation will never reach the structure. The three — question, theory, method — must form a coherent triple, each fitting the others. A study whose method cannot bear its theory's question is broken before it begins, no matter how well executed — which is exactly the method-claim mismatch you learned to catch as a reader in 13.2.1, now to be avoided as a builder .
Combining lenses: triangulation and its discipline
If no single tool fits every question, an obvious move follows: use several . This is right, and powerful — but it has its own discipline, and done carelessly it produces mush rather than depth.
Combining lenses and methods — done well, it is triangulation; done badly, it is incoherence.
The strong version is triangulation : approaching the same question from multiple theoretical angles or with multiple methods, so that each catches what the others miss and their convergence (or divergence) is itself informative. Study re-entry from prison with both statistics (how many reoffend, and what predicts it) and ethnography (what re-entry is like, how former prisoners understand it), and you get something neither could give alone — the pattern and the meaning, the scale and the texture. Where the two methods agree , your confidence rightly rises; where they disagree , you have found something important that a single method would have hidden. This is one of the most powerful moves in the discipline.
But triangulation has a discipline , and two cautions:
Respect each lens's blind spot. Every theory and method illuminates some things and is blind to others (13.1.1). Combining them well means knowing what each is good for and using each on the part of the question it suits — not smearing them all over everything. The structural lens for the pattern, the interactionist lens for the meaning; the survey for prevalence, the interview for experience. Combination is a division of labour among tools, each on its home ground.
Do not confuse combining with mushing. Throwing several theories and methods together without regard for their fit, or forcing incompatible assumptions into one incoherent frame, does not produce richness — it produces confusion (the "everything is a bit of everything" vapidity warned against in 13.1.1). Genuine triangulation is rigorous about which tool answers which part of the question; lazy eclecticism just piles tools up and hopes.
Building a toolkit is a lifelong discipline against your own favourite tool.
The deep lesson of this lesson is uncomfortable, because the enemy is you — specifically, your love of the tool you know best. Everyone who studies sociology seriously acquires a favourite: the theory that first made the world click, the method they are best at. That favourite is an asset and a permanent danger, because it is exactly the tool you will over-reach with, forcing questions it does not fit because it is the one you trust and enjoy.
So building a genuine toolkit is not a one-time acquisition; it is a lifelong discipline with two parts:
Keep adding tools, especially uncongenial ones. Deliberately learn the theories and methods you are not drawn to — the quantitative person learning ethnography, the theorist learning statistics, the conflict theorist genuinely mastering the functionalist case. Every tool you refuse to learn is a class of question you will misread. The goal is not comfort but coverage .
Catch yourself reaching for the hammer. Develop the reflex to notice when you are about to force a question through your favourite tool, and to ask instead: what does this question actually need — even if it's a tool I dislike? This self-suspicion is not a lack of conviction; it is the working humility of someone who knows that their greatest strength (their best tool) is also the source of their most confident errors.
The one-tool thinker feels more certain and is more often wrong; the many-tool thinker feels the friction of choice and is more often right. That friction — the discomfort of setting down the beloved hammer to pick up the right tool — is not a bug in expert judgement. It is expert judgement. A sociologist who never feels it has simply stopped noticing that they hammer everything.
One topic, four questions, four toolkits.
Take a single topic — say, homelessness — and watch how the question dictates completely different theory-method triples.
"How many people are homeless, and who is at greatest risk?" — a question of pattern and prevalence . Theory: structural (housing markets, poverty, 8-territory). Method: quantitative — counts, administrative data, statistical modelling of risk factors. An ethnography cannot answer this.
"What is it actually like to be homeless, and how do people survive and understand it?" — a question of meaning and experience . Theory: interactionist, phenomenological. Method: ethnography, in-depth interviews, immersion. A regression cannot answer this.
"Does Housing First actually reduce homelessness compared to the alternative?" — a question of cause . Theory: whatever specifies the mechanism. Method: a design that supports causal inference (ideally experimental/quasi-experimental with attention to confounding). A correlation cannot answer this.
"How did homelessness come to take its modern form, and why did it rise when it did?" — a question of change and origin . Theory: historical, political-economic. Method: historical and comparative analysis. A snapshot survey cannot answer this.
Same topic; four questions; four different theory-method triples — and using the wrong triple for a given question produces confident nonsense. The person with only the survey answers the first question well and butchers the other three; the person with only ethnography does the reverse. The master reads the question first and reaches for the triple it requires — which is why "what's your question?" is the first thing a good sociologist asks, of others and of themselves, before choosing a single tool.
Why this matters
Because the law of the instrument is not just a hazard of sociology; it is one of the great hazards of any trained mind, and the more expert you become, the more dangerous it gets. Expertise means mastering tools — and every tool mastered is a lens that starts, quietly, to make every problem look like the kind of problem that tool solves. The economist sees incentives everywhere, the lawyer sees rights and liabilities, the engineer sees systems to optimise, the therapist sees inner conflicts — each brilliant within their tool's reach and each prone to forcing questions that lie outside it. Sociology's insistence that the question comes first and that a serious thinker keeps many tools and picks by fit is a discipline against the characteristic blindness of expertise itself. It is, in a sense, the intellectual equivalent of humility: the refusal to assume that the way you happen to know how to solve problems is the way this problem should be solved.
For you, this means that thinking like a sociologist is not adopting a particular theory or method as your identity — "I'm a Marxist," "I'm a quantitative person" — but developing the higher skill of matching : reading a question precisely enough to know what it needs, holding enough tools to supply the need, and having the humility to reach past your favourite when the question calls for something else. The person who has one great tool is a specialist; the person who has many tools and the judgement to choose among them is a thinker. And the judgement — the friction of choosing, the self-suspicion about your own hammer, the willingness to learn the tool you dislike — is not a preliminary to the real work. It is the real work, the thing that separates doing sociology from merely applying a theory. Theory–method fit — the requirement that a study's method be capable of answering the kind of question its theory poses (e.g. qualitative methods for questions of meaning, causal designs for causal questions).
Triangulation — approaching one question with multiple theories or methods so that each compensates for the others' blind spots; convergence raises confidence, divergence reveals hidden complexity.
Lens blind spot — the set of things a given theory or method cannot see, which combination is meant to cover but which lazy eclecticism ignores.
Toolkit discipline — the lifelong practice of acquiring uncongenial tools and resisting the pull to force questions through one's favourite, so that questions are answered by fit rather than by preference.
Try it yourself:
One — Question first. Take a topic you care about and force yourself to turn it into three different precise questions (a "how many," a "what's it like," and a "what caused it"). Notice that each demands a different method — and that "I'm interested in X" gave you no method at all. The precise question, not the topic, is what points to the tools.
Two — Catch your hammer. Identify your own favourite tool — the theory or method you reach for first, the one that first made sociology click. Now take a question it does not fit well and honestly name what it would miss. The point is not to abandon your tool but to feel, concretely, the class of questions it distorts — so you'll notice next time you start hammering.
Three — Design a triangulation. Pick one question and sketch how you'd approach it with two different methods (say a survey and interviews). What would each catch that the other misses? What would it mean if they agreed — and if they disagreed? Feeling how the two together exceed either alone is the whole case for a toolkit over a single tool.
