The last lesson of Part 2. Everything in this Topic has concerned meaning conveyed in words — and a great deal of what passes between people in an encounter is not words at all.
The idea, in plain words
The channels
Kinesics — body movement, gesture, posture, facial expression. Note that gesture is not universal: the meanings of a thumb, a nod, a head movement, a beckoning hand vary substantially between societies and are learned (2.1.5).
Proxemics — distance and spatial arrangement. Treated at length below.
Haptics — touch. Who may touch whom, where, for how long, and in what settings, is one of the most tightly regulated aspects of social life and one of the clearest markers of relationship and rank.
Chronemics — the use of time. How long you are kept waiting; how quickly a message is answered; who may arrive late; whose time is treated as more valuable. This is one of the most reliable indicators of relative status in any setting, and it is entirely silent (1.1.3's clock time, applied).
Paralanguage — the vocal features that are not words: pitch, volume, speed, pauses, sighs, laughter, tone. This is where most of the "how it was said" lives, and it is what a transcript without Jefferson notation loses (2.4.4).
Appearance — dress, grooming, adornment, bodily comportment. Goffman's appearance and manner (2.4.2), and Bourdieu's social made body (2.1.13).
Proxemics, carefully
Edward T. Hall proposed in the 1960s that people maintain four distance zones, each with a close and far phase: intimate (roughly to 45 cm), personal (45 cm to 1.2 m), social (1.2 to 3.6 m) and public (beyond 3.6 m). Each supports different kinds of interaction and different sensory access — at intimate distance you can smell and feel heat; at public distance, gesture must be exaggerated to carry.
Three cautions, and they matter.
The figures are specific. Hall's measurements were derived from middle-class North Americans, and he said so. They are widely reproduced as universal, which they are not.
Cross-cultural variation is real but more complex than the popular version. Hall proposed a broad contrast between "contact" cultures (closer distances, more touch, more direct gaze) and "non-contact" cultures. Later research supports substantial cross-national variation in preferred distances — a large multi-country study found significant differences between countries in comfortable distance from strangers — while also finding that the simple contact/non-contact grouping does not hold up cleanly, and that temperature, age, gender and relationship type explain a great deal.
And distance is situational as much as cultural. The same person stands differently in a lift, a queue, a crowded train, a temple and a negotiation. Proxemic norms are relative to setting, and crowding is tolerated where it is unavoidable and impersonal — which is why a packed metro is bearable and the same density at a party would not be.
Goffman's territories of the self
Goffman's most useful and least-taught contribution in this area. He argued that a person carries a set of territories — claims to space, objects and information — whose violation is felt as a personal offence.
Personal space — the envelope around the body. The stall — a bounded space one may claim entirely for a period: a seat, a table, a telephone booth, a mat on a platform. Use space — the area around one needed for an activity: the space in front of a painting, the room to swing a bag. The turn — one's place in an ordering, most obviously a queue. Note that "jumping the queue" is a territorial offence, which is why it produces such disproportionate anger (1.1.3). The sheath — the skin and clothing, the most personal territory. Possessional territory — objects identified with the self, arrayed around it: a coat on a chair, a bag on a seat, a phone on a table. Information preserve — facts about oneself over which one expects to control access: what is in your bag, your diagnosis, your salary, your messages. Conversational preserve — the right to control who may summon you into talk, and when.
The value of this list is that it makes a diffuse feeling precise. When you feel invaded, you can now say which territory was entered — and, crucially, you can see that these claims are unequally honoured. Whose bag may be searched, whose information may be demanded, whose conversation may be interrupted, whose turn may be taken: those are questions about power, answered in the medium of space.

Nonverbal behaviour and power
Systematic differences in nonverbal behaviour by status and gender are well documented, and Nancy Henley's Body Politics (1977) is the classic sociological treatment.
The recurring asymmetries: higher-status persons take up more space and are afforded more; touch flows downward more freely than upward; interruption flows downward; the lower-status party is more likely to yield space, to smile, to monitor the other's expressions, and to be kept waiting.
Two things must be said about this literature. The asymmetries are real and have been replicated in many settings. And the interpretation is genuinely contested — some of the differences plausibly reflect the requirements of the position (people who must monitor a superior become good at reading them) rather than the expression of dominance as such. What is not contested is the practical finding: the distribution of spatial and temporal entitlements in a room is a reliable map of the distribution of power in it, and you can read it in thirty seconds.
The debunking section
Three widespread beliefs about nonverbal behaviour that are not supported, and which you should be able to correct.
"Ninety-three per cent of communication is nonverbal." This is a distortion of Albert Mehrabian's research, which concerned the resolution of inconsistent messages about feelings and attitudes in a laboratory setting with single words. It says nothing about communication in general, and Mehrabian himself has repeatedly disavowed the generalisation. It is one of the most durable false statistics in circulation.
"Body language reveals lying." The research on deception detection is consistent and unflattering: humans perform at close to chance, training programmes produce small improvements at best, and the cues popularly believed to indicate deception — gaze aversion, fidgeting — are poorly supported. Confidence in one's ability to detect lying is unrelated to accuracy, which has consequences in interviews, courts and border posts.
"Facial expressions are universal." The strong universality claim has been substantially challenged. There is evidence for cross-cultural recognition above chance for some expressions; there is also considerable evidence of cultural variation in production, interpretation, and the categories used. Treat it as contested rather than settled — and note that the display rules governing when an expression may be shown are unambiguously cultural.
The general lesson is 1.4.6's: popular nonverbal-communication claims are among the least reliable widely-believed things about human behaviour.
The self online
What happens to all of this when the body is removed?
The early expectation was that computer-mediated communication would be impoverished — "cues filtered out" — producing colder, more task-focused, more disinhibited interaction. Some of that was observed.
What actually happened was adaptation. Users reconstructed the missing channels: punctuation and capitalisation for paralanguage, emoji for facial display, response timing for chronemics, voice notes for tone, video for gaze and gesture, read receipts and typing indicators for the signals of attentiveness. The channels were rebuilt in the available medium — which is 2.1.15's reinvention, occurring at speed.
Three genuinely new features are worth naming.
Asynchrony changes the machinery. Conversation analysis's turn-taking system (2.4.4) does not apply: there is no projection of turn completion, no 200-millisecond norm, no repair in the next turn. Delay becomes ambiguous — is a slow reply a dispreferred second, or a meeting? Much interpersonal friction online is the misreading of chronemics in the absence of the cues that would disambiguate it.
Civil inattention is difficult to perform. Offline, you can demonstrate non-threat by looking and looking away. Online there is often no equivalent: viewing without responding may be recorded and read as pointed, while responding is an approach. The unmarked middle — present but not engaging — is exactly what many platforms do not support.
And self-presentation becomes persistent and searchable. Goffman's performances were ephemeral; a post is not. Audience segregation (2.4.2) fails under context collapse (2.3.2), and back regions are hard to maintain when any front region may be captured.
On video-call fatigue: proposed explanations include sustained close-up mutual gaze at intimate proxemic distances, the cognitive load of producing and reading degraded nonverbal cues, reduced mobility, and the unusual burden of seeing oneself continuously. These are plausible and the evidence is still developing; treat the phenomenon as real and the explanations as provisional.
Why it matters
It completes the account of how encounters work. Goffman's performance, Garfinkel's background, Sacks' turn-taking and this lesson's spatial and bodily channels together describe the medium in which all of social life is actually conducted.
It makes power readable without a single question. Who takes space, who yields, who touches, who waits, who may be interrupted, whose bag may be searched. Thirty seconds in a room tells you the structure, and you now have the vocabulary to say what you saw.
It supplies one of the clearest cases in this whole course — untouchability as a proxemic system — of an abstract concept illuminating a concrete, consequential and specifically Indian reality. And it explains why access to a road and a water tank were not symbolic demands.
And it leaves you properly sceptical. The area of social life about which people are most confident — reading others through their bodies — is the one where popular belief is least supported. That is a fitting note on which to end a Part about vocabulary: precision is what lets you tell a finding from a folk belief.
