Socialisation happens in institutions (2.3.5, 2.3.7). It also happens in time — and the moment in history at which you were born shapes what you are socialised into as decisively as any school or family.

This is the last lesson of Topic 2.3, and it closes the loop back to 1.1.1: Mills said the sociological imagination is the intersection of biography and history. This lesson is that intersection, made technical.

The idea, in plain words

The life course is constructed

Three demonstrations, in ascending order of surprise.

Childhood. Philippe Ariès argued in Centuries of Childhood (1960) that childhood as a distinct protected stage, with its own clothing, activities, literature and moral status, is a relatively modern European development — and that medieval society lacked the concept, treating children as small adults once past infancy. His evidence, drawn heavily from paintings and elite sources, has been substantially criticised: historians have shown medieval parents grieved their children and recognised childhood as a distinct phase. What survives the criticism is the weaker and still important claim: the content, duration and institutional treatment of childhood have changed enormously, and the modern arrangement — a long, schooled, non-working, legally protected childhood — is recent and unevenly distributed even now.

Adolescence. A clearer case. The concept was named and popularised by G. Stanley Hall in 1904, and the social stage it describes was produced by identifiable arrangements: compulsory schooling extending years of dependency, child labour laws removing young people from work, and age-graded institutions gathering large numbers of same-age people together (2.3.5). Where those arrangements are absent — as they were for most of history and are for many young people now — the transition from childhood to adult responsibility is short or non-existent.

Old age and retirement. The most striking. Retirement as a distinct life stage required pensions, a formal labour market, and enough people surviving to reach it. It is an institutional creation of the last century and a half. Note the grandfather in the story: he has no retirement because his society did not build one for him, and he has an arrangement instead — sons.

And note what all three cases show: stages of life are institutional products, and when the institutions change, the stages change.

The social clock

Every society carries age norms: expectations about the appropriate age for major transitions — leaving school, starting work, marrying, having children, becoming independent, retiring. Sociologists call the resulting schedule the social clock.

Its power is that people experience deviation from it as a personal condition. Being "late" to marry, "too old" to start a degree, "young" for a position — these are felt as facts about oneself rather than as positions relative to a schedule that varies by decade, class and country.

The clock is unequally applied. Its constraints on women's timing are typically tighter and more consequential than on men's, and the anxiety attached to being "behind" is one of the more reliable sources of the self-blame that 1.1.1 described.

Elder's life course perspective

Glen Elder's Children of the Great Depression (1974) is the study that turned these observations into a research programme, and it is worth knowing in outline because the design is so instructive.

Elder followed Californians who had been children during the 1930s Depression, and asked a question nobody had asked properly: did the Depression affect everyone the same way?

It did not — and the difference tracked age at the time of the shock. Children who were young adolescents when their families lost income were often pushed into work and responsibility early, and many showed, in later life, unusual resourcefulness and strong family orientation. Children who were very young during the worst years, and who experienced the deprivation through stressed parents during their most dependent phase, tended to fare worse on several measures.

Same historical event. Opposite effects. The variable was where in the life course it caught them.

From this Elder derived four principles that organise life course research:

Historical time and place — lives are shaped by the times and locations they are lived in. Timing — the same event has different consequences depending on when in a life it occurs. Linked lives — lives are lived interdependently; a shock to a parent is transmitted to a child, and social change is experienced through relationships. Human agency — people construct their lives through choices within the constraints of their circumstances (1.3.1, arriving in a research design).

Those four are among the most portable ideas in this course, and "linked lives" in particular explains a great deal — the grandfather's decision at nineteen is still shaping the son's obligations at twenty-five.

Age, period and cohort: a genuine methodological problem

You will meet this in Part 7 and it is worth flagging now, because it disciplines a whole class of claims.

When people differ, three explanations compete:

Age effects — differences due to being at a particular life stage. People become more risk-averse as they age. Period effects — differences due to something happening at a particular time, affecting everyone. A recession, a pandemic, a war. Cohort effects — differences due to being born at a particular time and therefore formed by particular conditions.

The problem is that these three cannot be fully separated, because age plus year of birth determines period exactly. This is the age–period–cohort identification problem, and it is not a technicality that better data solves; it is a mathematical property of the three variables. Researchers address it with additional assumptions, comparative designs and repeated cross-sections, and the results remain contestable.

The practical upshot, which you can use immediately: whenever someone tells you "young people today are more X," ask whether that is an age effect (young people have always been more X and grow out of it), a period effect (everyone became more X recently), or a cohort effect (this cohort is different and will stay different). Most confident claims about generations do not distinguish these, and the three imply completely different futures.

Cohorts and social change

Norman Ryder made the argument that cohorts are the mechanism of social change, and it links this lesson to 1.2.3.

Societies change, he argued, less because individuals change their minds than because cohorts formed under different conditions replace one another — demographic metabolism. Each new cohort arrives fresh, socialised by agents that have themselves changed (2.3.5), and is not committed to the arrangements its predecessors built.

This explains the characteristic shape of attitude change: slow, steady, apparently irreversible, and driven from the bottom of the age distribution. It also explains why change looks glacial across a decade and dramatic across fifty years, and why the fastest way to predict a society's attitudes in thirty years is to look at what its twenty-year-olds think now — with the caveat that period effects can shift everyone at once.

The Indian demographic case

Worth flagging because it is one of the largest cohort facts on earth.

India's population is unusually young: a very large cohort is currently entering working age, and will do so for another two decades. This produces what economists call a demographic dividend — a period in which the ratio of working-age people to dependants is favourable — and it is conditional: the dividend is realised only if that cohort finds work, education and health. If it does not, the same demographic fact produces a large cohort of underemployed young people, which is a very different social situation.

Note what the concept demonstrates: a birth cohort's size is a social force, shaping labour markets, politics, housing, education systems and the experience of everyone in it. A person born into a large cohort competes with more people at every stage of their life, through no act of their own — which is 1.1.1's structure, delivered by demography (11.3).

Why it matters

It completes Mills' formula with a mechanism. Biography meets history at a specific point, and where in a life the meeting occurs determines the effect. Elder's four principles turn that slogan into a research design.

It explains family conflict without blaming anybody. The three men in the story are not failing to understand each other because of character. They were socialised into different societies by agents that had changed between each of their childhoods, and each is applying a social clock that was accurate when he was twenty-five. That is a more useful and kinder account than most families have available.

It gives you the mechanism of long-run social change. Cohort replacement — demographic metabolism — explains the characteristic shape of value change (1.2.3, 2.1.2) better than any account of persuasion.

And it arms you against a great deal of confident nonsense. Generation talk is one of the most over-used and least disciplined vocabularies in public life. You can now ask the three questions that dissolve most of it: what formative event, encountered at what age, producing which contending responses?
