A critical analysis, however, must both establish this transformative power and question its limits: whether technology acts by itself, whether its effects are uniformly good, and whether it is the cause or the product of wider social forces.
The transformative role of science and technology is undeniable and operates at every level. Economically, successive technological revolutions — from the steam engine and the factory system to electricity, the assembly line and now automation and information technology — have repeatedly reorganised production, created new occupations and destroyed old ones, and raised productivity to historically unprecedented levels. Socially, the Industrial Revolution shifted populations from village to city, dissolved the large joint household in favour of the smaller nuclear family, and gave rise to new classes and new patterns of stratification. Culturally, advances in medicine and sanitation have lengthened life and altered demography, while mass communication and the internet have transformed how people learn, relate and form their sense of identity. Marx recognised the centrality of the productive forces, arguing that changes in the means of production — themselves driven by technology — ultimately reshape the whole edifice of social relations.
Yet a critical analysis must immediately qualify this picture. The first qualification is directed at technological determinism — the view that technology is an autonomous force that unilaterally dictates the shape of society. Thorstein Veblen and later critics rejected this, insisting that technology is created, adopted and used within a social and cultural context that decides which innovations are developed, how they are applied and to whose benefit. The same technology produces different effects in different societies, which shows that social choices, not the technology alone, determine outcomes. Technology enables change; it does not command it.
The second qualification concerns the uneven pace of adaptation. William Ogburn's concept of cultural lag captures the point that the material culture of technology changes rapidly, while the non-material culture of values, laws and institutions adjusts only slowly, producing a period of maladjustment and strain. New reproductive or digital technologies, for instance, race ahead of the ethical and legal frameworks needed to govern them, generating disorientation and conflict. Change driven by technology is therefore rarely smooth; it opens gaps between the technical and the social that societies struggle to close.
The third qualification is that the consequences of science and technology are frequently unintended and harmful as well as beneficial. Ulrich Beck's thesis of the risk society argues that advanced technology generates new, man-made hazards — environmental degradation, nuclear danger, industrial and ecological catastrophe — that are global in reach and hard to control. The very science that solves old problems manufactures new ones. Weapons technology has made war vastly more destructive, and industrialisation has driven the climate crisis. Progress, critically viewed, carries its own dangers.
The fourth qualification is that the benefits of technology are unequally distributed. The digital divide between those with access to information technology and those without, and the wider gulf between technologically advanced and developing societies, means that science and technology can deepen inequality as readily as they can relieve it. Modernisation theory once assumed that technology would lift all societies along a single path of progress, but the persistence of underdevelopment and the concentration of technological power in a few hands show that its fruits are far from evenly shared.
Taken together, these qualifications place science and technology within a fuller account of social change rather than above it. Technology is a necessary but not a sufficient cause; it works alongside economic interests, political power, cultural values and human agency, all of which shape how it is developed and deployed. The Indian experience illustrates both sides: the Green Revolution and the information-technology boom brought dramatic gains, yet each also widened regional and class inequalities and generated new social strains, confirming that technological change is filtered through existing social structures.
In sum, science and technology are decisive agents of social change, remaking the economy, social structure and culture of the modern world. But their role must be critically qualified: they do not act autonomously, their effects lag and strain against existing institutions, they generate risks as well as benefits, and their advantages are unequally distributed. Science and technology are best understood not as an independent master force but as powerful means whose consequences depend on the social order that creates and directs them.

Examiners look for balance in response to the command critically analyse. The strongest scripts first establish the genuine transformative power of science and technology across the economy, structure and culture, and then mount a structured critique — rejecting technological determinism, invoking Ogburn's cultural lag, Beck's risk society and the digital divide, and situating technology within a wider set of causal forces.
The common weakness is a celebratory essay that lists the benefits of technology without any critical qualification, ignoring the word critically. The other failing is to treat technology as an all-powerful autonomous force. To reach the top band, combine an appreciation of technology's real impact with a sharp critique of its autonomy, its uneven pace, its risks and its inequalities, and close with a measured judgement supported by Indian illustration.
