Keep each point tight and defined.

In the second half, evaluate whether this method is foolproof in sociology. Present the difficulties: the subject matter is human beings with consciousness, meaning and free will; the observer is part of the society observed, so full objectivity is elusive; controlled experiments are rarely possible; the Hawthorne effect and reactivity distort data; concepts are hard to operationalise; prediction is uncertain; and value neutrality, as Weber and Gouldner noted, is difficult to attain. Balance this against the interpretive tradition and the genuine achievements of empirical sociology.

Conclude with a measured verdict: scientific method disciplines sociological inquiry and remains essential, but the nature of social reality means it can never be wholly foolproof.

Scientific method is a systematic, disciplined mode of inquiry aimed at producing reliable, verifiable knowledge about the world. Several characteristics define it. It is empirical, grounded in observation and evidence rather than speculation or authority. It aspires to objectivity, requiring the investigator to set aside personal preferences and prejudices so that conclusions reflect the facts rather than the observer. It is verifiable and replicable — findings must be capable of independent checking, and a study conducted afresh under the same conditions should yield the same results. It proceeds systematically, through defined and rigorous procedures rather than haphazard impression. It works through hypotheses, which are formulated and then tested against evidence, so that claims are open to refutation. It seeks generalisation, moving from particular observations towards law-like statements about relationships. It demands reliability and validity in measurement — consistency of results and accuracy in measuring what is intended. Finally, scientific knowledge is cumulative and self-correcting, advancing by building upon and revising earlier work.

Is this method foolproof when applied to sociological research? The candid answer is no, and the reasons lie in the distinctive nature of the subject matter. Sociology studies human beings, who possess consciousness, will and the capacity to attach meaning to their actions; unlike physical objects, they interpret their situation and may act unpredictably. The sociologist is also a member of the society being studied, so complete detachment is difficult and the observer's own values, class and background may colour the inquiry. Controlled laboratory experiments, the gold standard of the natural sciences, are rarely feasible in the study of whole societies, both for practical and for ethical reasons. Human subjects react to being observed — the Hawthorne effect shows that behaviour changes under scrutiny — so the very act of measurement can distort what is measured. Sociological concepts such as alienation, status or anomie are abstract and resist precise operationalisation, and different researchers may measure them differently. Prediction is hazardous, since social phenomena are shaped by innumerable interacting causes and by the free choices of actors. Above all, value neutrality is hard to achieve; Weber insisted on it as an ideal while acknowledging that the selection of problems is itself value-laden, and Gouldner went further in questioning whether a value-free sociology is even possible or desirable.

These difficulties do not warrant abandoning scientific method, and here a balanced position is essential. The interpretive tradition, associated with Weber's verstehen and later with phenomenology, argues that understanding subjective meaning is a legitimate and rigorous scientific task in its own right, adapted to the human subject matter rather than borrowed wholesale from physics. Empirical sociology has genuine achievements to its credit — Durkheim's study of suicide, systematic survey research, and the careful measurement of social trends all demonstrate that disciplined, evidence-based inquiry yields real and reliable knowledge about society. Techniques of sampling, triangulation, reliability and validity testing, and reflexive awareness of the researcher's own position all serve to reduce, if not eliminate, the sources of error.

The reasoned conclusion is therefore twofold. Scientific method is indispensable to sociology: it disciplines observation, guards against prejudice, and distinguishes knowledge from mere opinion. But it is not foolproof. The consciousness of the human subject, the involvement of the observer in the observed, the difficulty of experiment and prediction, and the elusiveness of value neutrality mean that sociological knowledge is necessarily more provisional and more contested than knowledge of the physical world. Sociology is best understood as a science of its own kind, one that adapts the scientific method to a subject matter that thinks back — rigorous in aspiration, imperfect in execution, and all the more honest for admitting it.

The examiner looks first for a clear, well-organised account of the characteristics of scientific method. Candidates who merely list adjectives without explanation, or who omit central features such as verifiability and objectivity, limit their marks in the opening half.

The second part is where the answer is truly graded. The word foolproof invites a critical stance, and the examiner rewards candidates who neither worship nor reject science but weigh its application to society carefully. A strong script marshals the specific obstacles — consciousness and meaning, the observer's involvement, the impossibility of controlled experiment, reactivity, weak operationalisation, and the value-neutrality debate — and names the thinkers, especially Weber and Gouldner, who framed them.

The highest marks go to answers that maintain balance, acknowledging both the real achievements of empirical sociology and the interpretive alternative, and that close with a defensible verdict rather than a vague hedge. Coherence between the two halves, conceptual precision and an honest final judgement distinguish the best responses.
