In the Hawthorne studies, investigators expecting to measure the effect of lighting on productivity found instead that being observed itself changed workers' behaviour, yielding the celebrated Hawthorne effect — a classic serendipitous discovery. Ethnographers regularly report that their most important insights arose from incidents they had not gone looking for.

The value of the concept is to legitimise and even institutionalise attention to the unexpected within a discipline that prizes hypothesis-testing. Its limitation is that serendipity cannot be planned or guaranteed; it depends on chance and on the individual researcher's alertness, and undisciplined pursuit of every anomaly can distract from the original inquiry. Yet by naming the pattern, Merton reminded sociologists that rigour and openness to surprise are not opposed but complementary.

The examiner wants to see that you know serendipity as Merton's technical concept, not merely the everyday notion of a happy accident. The typical weakness is to write loosely about luck in discovery without reference to Merton or to the disciplined character of the pattern.
