Breaking down the question
This ten-mark question has the familiar two-part shape: define the hypothesis, then critically evaluate its significance. In a short answer the definition must be exact and brief, leaving room for an evaluation that is genuinely two-sided.
The word critically is the key. It signals that the candidate should not merely list the uses of a hypothesis but weigh them — acknowledging both the indispensable functions a hypothesis performs and the situations in which hypothesis-led research is inappropriate or constraining. An uncritical hymn of praise misreads the directive.
The examiner is testing whether the candidate understands where hypotheses fit in the research process — chiefly in deductive, quantitative, positivist designs — and can recognise the alternative, inductive traditions in which research proceeds without a prior hypothesis.
How to approach it
Define the hypothesis precisely — a tentative, testable statement of the expected relationship between two or more variables — and note its provisional, falsifiable character, as set out in the note on variables, sampling, reliability and validity.
Then give the evaluation two sides. On the positive side, set out the functions: it directs the enquiry, links theory to evidence, defines the variables to be measured, and makes findings testable. On the critical side, note that exploratory and interpretive research often proceeds inductively, that premature hypotheses can bias observation, and that grounded theory generates rather than tests. Conclude that the hypothesis is valuable but not universal.
Model answer
Definition. A hypothesis is a tentative, testable statement asserting an expected relationship between two or more variables. It is a provisional answer to the research question, framed clearly enough to be confirmed or refuted by evidence. "Children of educated mothers stay longer in school" is a hypothesis: it names an independent variable (maternal education) and a dependent variable (years of schooling) and predicts a relationship between them. A well-formed hypothesis is specific, empirically testable, and falsifiable — capable, in principle, of being shown false.
The significance of the hypothesis. In the deductive, quantitative tradition of social research the hypothesis performs several vital functions.

Direction. It gives the enquiry focus and purpose, telling the researcher what to observe and what to ignore, and so preventing an aimless accumulation of facts.

Bridge between theory and evidence. Robert Merton showed how the hypothesis translates abstract theory into a concrete, checkable proposition, and how empirical findings in turn feed back to refine theory. It is the hinge on which the theory-research relationship turns.

Operationalisation. By naming the variables and the expected relationship, the hypothesis dictates what must be measured and how, shaping the research design, the choice of indicators, and the mode of analysis.

Testability and objectivity. Because a hypothesis can be confirmed or refuted, it makes findings public and replicable, lending social research the discipline and credibility of scientific method.
Critical evaluation. Yet the significance of the hypothesis must not be overstated, for hypothesis-led research is neither universal nor always desirable.

Exploratory research needs none. When a field is new or little understood, the researcher cannot responsibly frame a precise hypothesis in advance; the study's purpose is to discover patterns, not to test a prediction.

The inductive and interpretive alternative. Qualitative and interpretive sociology often proceeds inductively, allowing understanding to emerge from immersion in the data. In the grounded theory of Glaser and Strauss, theory is generated from data rather than tested against a prior hypothesis, and imposing one at the outset would defeat the method.

Risk of bias. A hypothesis fixed too early can blinker the researcher, encouraging attention to confirming evidence and neglect of the unexpected — a real danger to open enquiry.

Not all questions are hypothesis-shaped. Descriptive, historical, and exploratory studies may legitimately pursue questions rather than test propositions.
Assessment. The hypothesis is indispensable to explanatory, quantitative, positivist research, where it supplies direction, testability, and the link between theory and evidence. It is not, however, a universal requirement of social enquiry: exploratory and interpretive research often works better without one, and grounded theory reverses the relationship by generating hypotheses as an outcome. Its significance, therefore, is real but conditional — a powerful instrument in the right design, an inappropriate constraint in the wrong one.
Examiner's perspective
Because the directive is critically evaluate, the discriminating feature of this answer is its two-sidedness. Many candidates define the hypothesis competently and then simply list its virtues; the marks that separate a strong script come from also recognising research contexts — exploratory, interpretive, grounded-theory — in which a prior hypothesis is unnecessary or even harmful.
Examiners reward a precise definition that identifies the hypothesis as a testable, falsifiable statement of a relationship between variables, ideally with a clean illustration naming the variables. Vague definitions that equate a hypothesis with a mere "guess" cost marks.
The best short answers close with a calibrated verdict — the hypothesis is central to deductive quantitative research but not a universal requirement of social science — rather than an unqualified endorsement. That balance, achieved economically within the ten-mark limit, is the mark of methodological command.
