Breaking down the question

This is a ten-mark question with a two-part structure: first define reliability, then discuss its importance. The economy of a short answer means every sentence should carry weight — a crisp definition followed by a focused argument for why reliability matters, without padding.

The first task is conceptual precision. Reliability is a technical term in research methodology, and the examiner wants it distinguished from the everyday sense of "trustworthiness" and, crucially, from validity, with which it is routinely confused.

The second task, discuss the importance, asks not merely to assert that reliability matters but to explain why — in terms of replication, comparison, cumulative knowledge, and the scientific credibility of sociology. A brief note on its limits sharpens the discussion.

How to approach it

Define reliability first — the consistency and repeatability of a measure — and immediately illustrate with the standard test-retest idea. Then, as covered in the note on variables, sampling, reliability and validity, distinguish it from validity: a measure can be reliable without being valid, but cannot be valid without being reliable.

For importance, marshal three or four connected reasons — replication, comparability, cumulative knowledge, and scientific credibility — rather than a vague appeal to "accuracy". A short closing qualification, noting that reliability is necessary but not sufficient, shows methodological maturity.

Model answer

Definition. Reliability refers to the consistency, stability, and repeatability of a measurement. A research instrument is reliable if it yields the same results when applied repeatedly to the same object under the same conditions. If a questionnaire measuring social attitudes produces broadly the same scores when administered to the same respondents on two occasions, it is said to be reliable. Reliability is thus concerned with the dependability of measurement — with the absence of random error — rather than with whether the instrument measures the right thing.

Methodologists distinguish several forms. Test-retest reliability checks consistency over time by repeating a measure. Inter-observer (or inter-coder) reliability checks whether different researchers, observing or coding the same phenomenon, arrive at the same result. Internal consistency checks whether the several items of a scale that claim to measure one concept in fact move together.

Distinction from validity. Reliability must be separated from validity, which asks whether an instrument measures what it claims to measure. A scale can be perfectly reliable yet invalid — a bathroom scale that reads five kilograms too high is consistent but wrong. Reliability is therefore a necessary but not sufficient condition for good measurement: valid measurement presupposes reliability, but reliability alone does not guarantee validity.

Importance in social science research. Several considerations make reliability indispensable.

  1. Replication. Science advances by the checking of results. Only a reliable instrument allows another researcher to repeat a study and confirm or challenge its findings; without consistency, replication is impossible and results cannot be verified.

  2. Comparability. Sociology frequently compares groups, places, or periods. Reliable measurement ensures that observed differences reflect real variation in the social world rather than fluctuations in the measuring instrument.

  3. Cumulative knowledge. A discipline builds a dependable body of knowledge only when its measures are stable. Unreliable data cannot be aggregated or built upon, so reliability underpins the very possibility of cumulative social science.

  4. Scientific credibility. Because sociology's claim to be a science rests partly on the rigour of its methods, demonstrable reliability lends its findings authority and guards against the charge that they are merely impressionistic.

A necessary qualification. Reliability is especially straightforward in quantitative, structured research, and interpretivists rightly caution that a rigid pursuit of it can strip social meaning from the data. High reliability secured at the cost of validity — measuring the trivial precisely — is a poor bargain. Sound research therefore seeks reliability and validity together, treating consistency as the foundation on which meaningful measurement is built rather than as an end in itself.

Examiner's perspective

In a ten-mark answer, the examiner is chiefly checking whether the candidate can define reliability precisely and separate it cleanly from validity. The single most common error is to conflate the two; a script that keeps them distinct, ideally with the reliable-but-invalid illustration, has already earned the core marks.

The discussion of importance should give reasons, not adjectives. Candidates who ground reliability in replication, comparability, and cumulative knowledge show they understand why it matters methodologically. A brief, well-judged qualification about the interpretivist reservation signals the balance that lifts a competent answer to a strong one — provided it does not crowd out the definition the question asks for first.
